On the morning of Feb. 4, 1955, (58 years ago this morning) Albert Helms Jr. was delivering The Virginian-Pilot on the 400 block of Boissevain Ave. in Norfolk. As he approached an apartment building, he saw smoke coming from one of the windows. Albert ran into the building and began pounding on the doors to alert the residents. After locating an apartment with a phone, he told the occupant to call the fire department. Rushing to the apartment unit where the fire was located, he knocked on the door until a woman emerged from behind a door of the smoke filled residence. Albert assisted in ushering the building’s occupants outside, as engines from Company No. 3 arrived with Albert Helms Sr. on board. Albert’s father was attached to that particular firehouse.  More at content source -
